Common names: Candelaria (Guatemala), Guaria morada (Costa Rica).
Distribution: From Mexico (Chiapas) to Panama.
Habitat: Epiphytic in seasonal and wet forests, from 200 to about 2000 meters of elevation.
Etymology: Guarianthe, from the Costa Rican word Guaria, a showy orchid, and the Greek anthos, flower; skinneri to honor the British orchidologist George Skinner, resident in Guatemala, who introduced the species into cultivation in England.
Notes: It is the national flower of Costa Rica.
